Der Ned Kelly Award wird von der Crime Writers Association of Australia vergeben. Der Preis ist benannt nach dem berühmten australischen Outlaw Edward Kelly, der im 19. Jahrhundert mit seiner Gang die Outbacks unsicher machte. Neben den hier angeführten Kategorien werden zusätzlich Trophäen für das beste Sachbuch und das beste Kinder- bzw. Jugendbuch vergeben. Die Kategorie "Lifelong Contribution" ist nicht nur Autoren vorbehalten, sondern auch Kritikern, Verlegern und sonstigen Personen, die sich um die australische Kriminalliteratur verdient gemacht haben: 2002 etwa wurde mit Patrick Gallagher ein Verleger des Hauses Allen & Unwin geehrt.

Nicht klären können wir die Modalitäten der Verleihung: Mit Barry Maitland hat zumindest ein Nicht-Australier den Preis gewonnen, der allerdings in Australien lebt. Die Frage ist, ob umgekehrt australische Schriftsteller nominiert werden können, die außerhalb Australiens leben (Claire McNab etwa, die sich seit langem in den USA aufhält).
1998 wurde der Ned Kelly Award nicht vergeben.
